August Special Study Session by Regular Members was held

The August special study session was held on Friday, August 6 by regular member doctors.

THIS TIME, WE INVITED DR. TAIICHI KATAYAMA OF THE UNITED GRADUATE SCHOOL OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT, OSAKA UNIVERSITY, WHO WAS INVITED TO DELIVER THE KEYNOTE LECTURE AT THE 5TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 19, TO LUKE’S ASHIYA CLINIC IN HYOGO PREFECTURE FOR THE ZOOM EVENT.

WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE EFFECTS OF INTESTINAL FLORA TRANSPLANTATION (FMT) IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER ON GASTROINTESTINAL SYMPTOMS AND CHANGES IN THE INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA. IN ADDITION TO DOCTORS’ FINDINGS AND CHANGES IN THE INTESTINAL FLORA BALANCE, WE ASK PARENTS TO FILL IN VARIOUS CHECK SHEETS AND DAILY CHANGES ONLINE.

Dr. Katayama believed that the problem was that there was a lack of means for others to understand how people with autistic spectrum disorder feel and think, and that it was difficult to understand from the outside. Therefore, he was involved in the development of Gazefinder® as a simple and objective visualization tool that anyone can understand, and its measurement is currently being introduced in the one-and-a-half year old health checkups of some municipalities, mainly in Osaka Prefecture.

We have focused on the fact that children with autism spectrum disorder change their speech, behavior, and stool status before and after transplantation. The Gazefinder® developed by Dr. Katayama and his team allows the child to look at the screen for only two minutes, and the screen will show the trajectory of “what he looked at”.

Gazefinder® is not an autism spectrum disorder diagnostic device. Also, until now, most of the changes that have occurred as a result of intestinal flora transplantation have been based on the observations of family members and caregivers, not the individual. However, a 5-year-old boy who cooperated with us in taking measurements before and after the transplant clearly showed a change in what he was seeing.

DR. KATAYAMA EXPLAINED HOW SUCH A CHANGE WAS ACHIEVED IN JUST OVER A MONTH, AND THE TEACHERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE ZOOM SESSION WERE ABLE TO SEE THE SCREEN OF THE MEASUREMENT AND REALIZE THAT THEY COULD OBJECTIVELY CONFIRM THE CHANGE WITH THIS MEASUREMENT, WHICH WAS A VERY VALUABLE TIME FOR THEM.

At the 5th Annual Conference on September 19, Dr. Taiichi Katayama will give a keynote speech and present case reports of children with autism spectrum disorder, as well as a tally of measurements taken with the Gazefinder® before and after transplantation.
